The Marine Science and Technology Student Association (Himitika), Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK) IPB University held the Himiteka Capacity Building peak activity entitled ‘Marine Survival: Forming a Generation of ITK Students who are Proactive, Adaptive, Think Critically and Ethically in Social Interaction’. This event was held at the Palabuhanratu Marine Field Station which was attended by the ITK IPB University extended family including lecturers, educational staff (tendik), students and alumni.

This capacity building aims to prepare new students from the ITK Department of IPB University who are expected to continue the leadership of Himiteka. Apart from that, this activity is a forum for participants to get to know and build relationships with the ITK extended family.

On this peak day, participants were given insight into marine survival which aims to provide an understanding of occupational safety and health (K3) and handling emergency conditions when carrying out activities on the coast or at sea. The material was delivered by Sri Ratih Deswati, SPi, MSi as K3L staff of the ITK Department. Also present was Agus Susilo, ITK class 25 alumni, who delivered and encouraged strengthening teamwork in continuing the Himiteka baton. Participants also took part in a series of other activities in the form of outbound as a form of implementation of their teamwork and cohesiveness.

“This peak day is not only designed for the short term. It is hoped that, in the long term, new students who will enter the world of study in the department will be able to carry out academic and organizational processes well. “Hopefully what is instilled during the activities will be a provision to prepare oneself for life in the post-campus world,” said Danni Gilbert as chief executive.

Danni continued, apart from the academic aspect, this activity also emphasized the importance of character development and social ethics. Participants are guided to understand their moral role in social interactions, especially in the context of work in the maritime field.

In closing the activity, the Chairman of the IPB University ITK Department, Dr Syamsul Bahri Agus appreciated the journey of this year’s capacity building process. According to him, this is beneficial for new students, because through this activity they can learn the basics of teamwork and serve as a gateway to enter the world of lectures in the department.

“Being witnessed by the sea is proof of the beginning of your journey at ITK IPB University. In the future, there are still many processes and challenges to be faced, stay enthusiastic, look after each other’s friends and the good name of ITK. “Never give up, because a marine will never give up on the sea,” concluded Dr Syamsul while welcoming the ITK class 59 students to join as part of the big family of the IPB University ITK Department.
