Department of Aquaculture, Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science (FPIK) IPB University held a public lecture by inviting Prof Ikuo HIRONO from Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, Japan, 28/8. On this occasion, the students received material on the role of “Vaccine for aquaculture” and “Beneficial bacteria for Aquaculture”.

In his presentation, Prof Hirono talked about vaccine applications that have been applied throughout the world. He also talked about Japan’s efforts to carry out vaccine research for aquaculture from the laboratory scale to making regulations for implementation in the field.

“The role of good bacteria or commonly called probiotics can suppress bad bacteria, both in the cultivation environment and in the digestive tract of cultured fish,” said Prof Hirono.

He also compared its effectiveness with handling using vaccines and antibiotics.

Head of the BDP (Aquaculture) Department of FPIK IPB University, Prof. Alimuddin, explained that this activity provided new knowledge about the potential use of vaccines in fishery products.

“The use of vaccines in fisheries is still a challenge in Indonesia, especially shrimp farming systems, for example, can be disrupted by climate change that affects the cultivation process, as well as mutations and variations in viruses and bacteria in the environment,” he said.

However, he said, this opportunity is huge considering the wealth of fisheries in Indonesia. Therefore, he hopes that there can be cooperation between academics, government and the fisheries industry sector to think about how to use and develop vaccines and antibiotics in aquaculture in Indonesia.
