Gaining Being a Biology Student

Being a student is indeed not easy. There is no day without going to class and laboratory, if it is nearing the exam time of course memorizing the material all night long. Not to mention the unforgiving task, coming from all directions. But is being a student no fun?

The confession came from a Biology student at IPB University, Muhimat. He tells us that Biology students don’t only study and memorize as many people imagine. In addition to studying, going to the laboratory, animal surgery or cutting plants, Biology students do not lose the opportunity to do many cool things such as organizing and channeling hobbies.

Not only facilitating the development of science, the Biology Department of IPB University also accommodates students in order to develop soft skills through the Biology Student Association (Himabio).

Himabio IPB University has carved his work both at the college and national level. Through the Biology Quick Catch Competition (LCTB), Himabio promoted the Biology Department of IPB University to high school students throughout Indonesia. Every year, no less than 500 participants participate in the LCTB. In addition, there is also Biology on Science and Application (Bionic) which has successfully held national-level seminars and college and high school competitions.

Himabio was actively involved directly in the community through the ABIOTIC program in the form of village development and giving skills to Biology students on how to make tempeh, kokedama, and terrarium. Every year Himabio invites Biology alumni from all over Indonesia to come and provide insight into post-campus life.

In addition, this student association also routinely invites its members to enjoy nature. Biology is the science of living things, and to learn it the most appropriate is to jump right into nature. Through the Nature Exploration program, they can explore the open air as has been done on Sempu Island, Malang.

Muhimat, who is the Chair of Himabio for 2018-2019, said, “The student association is the face of the department. Because every department at IPB University offers different knowledge, it seems to have become a necessity if each set has its own characteristics. The association exists to make students in the department live up to their professionalism,” he said.

Speaking of change, the student who was researching about this fungus felt Himabio to be one of the starting points for his change. Being the head of a student association means being the head and ear of all stakeholders in the department. Muhimat admitted that this was not easy. Sometimes the ideas he thinks about are not the same as what department students want. But from this he learned, that being able to accept and appreciate ideas from others is very important.

A different story came from Dova Kelvin, Himabio’s representative who had accompanied Muhimat, leading the Biology student organization. Kelvin now serves as Chair of Himabio 2019-2020. Kelvin, who has just served as chairman for a month, is determined to increase the branding of the biology department. Kelvin and his colleagues have designed several surprises. With the tagline ‘starting from small things’, Kelvin believes that just asking for news, congratulating each Biology student’s achievements, can have a greater impact.

Himabio, who had accompanied him since his first year in the department, was considered home. For this reason, Kelvin will not hesitate to use all his abilities to make Himabio more victorious. (NR)

asiswa memang tidaklah mudah. Tiada hari tanpa masuk kelas dan nge-lab, kalau sudah mendekati waktu ujian tentu menghafal materi semalam suntuk. Belum lagi tugas yang tidak kenal ampun, datang dari segala arah. Tapi apakah menjadi mahasiswa tidak menyenangkan?

Pengakuan datang dari seorang mahasiswa Biologi IPB University, Muhimat. Ia mengisahkan bahwa mahasiswa Biologi itu kerjaannya tak hanya belajar dan menghafal seperti dibayangkan banyak orang.   Selain belajar, ke laboratorium, bedah hewan atau menyayat tumbuhan, mahasiswa Biologi tak kehilangan kesempatan untuk melakukan banyak hal yang asik-asik seperti berorganisasi dan menyalurkan hobi.

Tidak hanya mewadahi perkembangan ilmu pengetahuan, Departemen Biologi IPB University juga mewadahi mahasiswanya agar dapat mengembangkan softskill lewat Himpunan Mahasiswa Biologi (Himabio).

Himabio IPB University telah menorehkan karyanya baik di tingkat perguruan tinggi maupun nasional. Lewat Lomba Cepat Tangkap Biologi (LCTB), Himabio mempromosikan Departemen Biologi IPB University kepada murid-murid SMA di seluruh Indonesia. Tiap tahunnya, tak kurang dari 500 orang peserta yang mengikuti LCTB. Selain itu, ada juga Biology on Science and Application (Bionic) yang telah sukses mengadakan seminar tingkat nasional dan perlombaan tingkat perguruan tinggi maupun SMA.

Himabio pun aktif terjun langsung ke masyarakat lewat program ABIOTIC berupa bina desa dan memberikan keterampilan pada mahasiswa-mahasiswa Biologi bagaimana cara membuat tempe, kokedama, dan terarium. Tiap tahunnya Himabio mengundang para alumni Biologi dari penjuru Indonesia untuk datang dan memberikan insight kehidupan paska kampus.

Selain itu, himpunan mahasiswa ini juga rutin mengajak anggotanya untuk menikmati alam. Biologi adalah ilmu mengenai mahluk hidup, dan untuk mempelajarinya memang yang paling tepat adalah langsung terjun ke alam. Lewat program Eksplorasi Alam, mereka dapat mengeksplorasi alam terbuka seperti yang sudah dilakukan di Pulau Sempu, Malang.

Muhimat yang merupakan Ketua Himabio kepengurusan 2018-2019 ini menuturkan, “Himpunan mahasiswa adalah wajah dari departemen. Karena setiap departemen di IPB University menawarkan ilmu yang berbeda, rasanya sudah menjadi keharusan jika tiap himpunan memiliki ciri khas. Himpunan ada untuk membuat mahasiswa di dalam departemen menghayati keprofesiannya,” ujarnya.

Berbicara tentang perubahan, mahasiswa yang sedang meneliti tentang cendawan ini merasa Himabio menjadi salah satu starting point perubahan dirinya. Menjadi ketua himpunan mahasiswa berarti menjadi kepala dan telinga dari seluruh stakeholders di departemen tersebut. Muhimat mengaku bahwa hal ini tidak mudah. Kadang ide yang ia pikirkan tidak sama dengan apa yang diinginkan oleh mahasiswa departemen. Namun dari sini ia belajar, bahwa mampu menerima dan menghargai ide  dari orang lain sangat penting.

Cerita berbeda datang dari Dova Kelvin, wakil Himabio yang pernah menemani Muhimat, memimpin organisasi mahasiswa Biologi tersebut. Kelvin kini menjabat sebagai Ketua Himabio 2019-2020. Kelvin yang baru menjabat menjadi ketua selama sebulan bertekad meningkatkan branding departemen biologi. Kelvin dan rekan-rekannya telah merancang beberapa kejutan. Dengan tagline ‘mulai dari hal kecil’, Kelvin percaya bahwa hanya dengan menanyakan kabar, mengucapkan selamat untuk tiap pencapaian mahasiswa Biologi, dapat memberikan dampak yang lebih besar.

Himabio yang telah menemaninya sejak tahun pertama masuk departemen sudah dianggapnya rumah. Karena itulah, Kelvin takkan segan mengerahkan seluruh kemampuannya agar Himabio semakin berjaya. (ASK/Zul)
