IPB Students Make Jamu Rempah to Lower Cholesterol in Quail Eggs

Quail eggs is one of the livestock products that much favored by people because it tastes good and nutritious. But people worry about consuming quail eggs because of high cholesterol level compared to chicken eggs. Meanwhile, quail eggs can potentially be nationwide provider of animal protein.
Excess cholesterol level if consumed can cause various diseases such as heart attack and narrowing of blood vessels. Seeing this condition, three students of the Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) made "Herbal Spices" to lower cholesterol from quail eggs. They are Arrum Andari, Endina Nur Anisa, and Riska Febri Wulandari.
"Jamu Rempah is herbal medicine made from spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, cloves, nutmeg, and mace. Jamu Rempah contains active compounds such as alkaloids, flavonoids, and tannins. These active compounds can inhibit the accumulation of fat and cholesterol in the body of animal," said Arrum, as the team leader.
Under the supervision of Ir. Dwi Margi Suci, MS, lecturer at the Department of Nutrition and Feed Technology, Faculty of Animal Science Science IPB, "Jamu Rempah" became one of Student Creativity Program (PKM) in Research 2018. The title of the research is "Supplementation of Jamu Rempah in Quail to Produce Low-Cholesterol Quail Eggs".
The giving of Jamu Rempah is done by direct mixing with drinking water as much as 1 liter of water. The results of this study indicate that the addition of Jamu Rempah as much as 10 ml in 1 liter of drinking water can reduce the level of quail egg cholesterol up to 49.9 percent.
Arrum said the success of this research can be used as a first step in increasing the production of low-cholesterol quail eggs in Indonesia. "Jamu Rempah also has potential in the social and economic fields as it can create new business fields and increase income of quail farmers," he said.
According to Arrum, "Jamu Rempah" is an early finding that will be developed again in the future. Arrum and her friends plan to produce low-cholesterol quail eggs in bulk, publish scientific articles, and make Intellectual Property Rights and Patents. (RYF)
