Limosim Application Initiation, IPB University Student Wins 3rd Place in National Competition
The livestock sector plays an important role in the national economy. Livestock raising by smallholder farmers is still traditional in nature and productivity is still relatively low. One of the commodities of livestock that has a high demand in Indonesia is milk. Unfortunately, milk production in Indonesia only grew by 2 percent, which is very small compared to milk demand, which was 14.01 percent during the 2002-2007 period. The gap between consumption growth and production causes the number of Indonesian milk imports to continue to increase. This is caused by the condition of good and proper cultivation management that has not been applied by farmers.
This prompted three students from the Faculty of Animal Husbandry of IPB University namely M. Farhan, Rechsa Amberty, and Kodarusman to discuss an application called Limosim (Livestock Monitoring System) in the National Essay Competition with the theme ‘Millennial Generation Innovation Facing Global Challenges in Efforts to Realize Indonesia 2045 Gold’ .
Limosim is an application based on digital technology in the field of animal husbandry which is intended as a medium for monitoring people’s farms, especially dairy farms. Limosim comes with the concept of monitoring that is precise, accurate, and efficient. With the use of digital technology as a tool for data processing, it is expected to create a management strategy for the development of smallholder farms that is fast and in real time.
“So, this Limosim Application is a liaison between dairy cattle farmers and animal husbandry experts to help in the development of community farms,” said Rechsa.
Furthermore, Rechsa explained the Limosim Application that they initiated would provide a variety of important information resources about dairy farming as well as cultivation management. With such a system it is hoped that people’s farms will not experience a shortage of information resources which will cause farmers to lose money and even go out of business. The information resources can be in the form of procedures for handling pregnant cows, handling sick cows, how to make rations, capital resources, and other important livestock information.
So that the purpose of this application can be realized, this team has equipped the Limosim application with various features that will support the performance of the application system. These features are the homepage, profile, discussion, and monitoring. The main feature that becomes the focus of Limosim is the monitoring feature. “This feature will facilitate the breeders to input data on the development of dairy farm production along with other data so that business development can be monitored to decide on an appropriate and accurate management system,” said Rechsa.
This idea succeeded in delivering a team that both came from the Faculty of Animal Husbandry of IPB University to win 3rd place in the National Economic Management Creative Essay Competition at Semarang State University (6/10).
This group plans to develop this idea into an actual application form by collaborating with other faculties at IPB University. This group also hopes that this idea can make Indonesia self-sufficient in milk and support the realization of Indonesia Gold 2045. (AVR)
