Department of Aquatic Resources Management (MSP), Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Sciences (FPIK) IPB University equips its students with knowledge and skills on work safety in the field. Aspects of Health, Occupational Safety and Environmental Protection (K3LL) is one of the skills that every academic community needs to master.

After the firefighting training, in early March the MSP Department held basic sea survival training. Namely skills in saving themselves when working or traveling at sea (offshore) in the event of an accident.

The training was held at the Aquatic Center, IPB University's swimming pool which was intended for activities related to diving training, snorkelling, sea survival training, aquatic/marine instrumentation trials and so on.

"Some of the things that were taught directly in this training were the practice of wearing life jackets, jumping into the water safely from a height, forming a safe position in the water while waiting for the rescue team, moving in groups on the surface of the water, forming a position when a participant is very weak. health, forming a position to send a signal to the Search and Rescue (SAR) team from passing helicopters or planes, using the life craft, getting on and off the life craft, rowing and reversing the life craft and so on," said Prof Hefni Effendi, Head of the IPB MSP Department University.

According to him, this basic sea survival training activity is not only attended by people who can swim, but also people who cannot swim at all.
"Because if you have used the life jacket correctly, surely if you fall into the water, both fresh and sea water will definitely float. The most important thing is not to panic, stay calm and calm," he added.

He added, there were several trainees who could not swim. However, guided by professional instructors, participants who initially had a phobia of jumping into the water, when they float well on the surface of the water after plunging, instead become addicted and can continue to follow the training well until the end.

"So for those who have a phobia of water, don't worry, take part in basic sea survival training, there will definitely be a lot of knowledge and benefits to be gained," he continued.

According to him, this basic sea survival training is mandatory for all MSP Department students. The aim is to equip them with self-rescue skills when working in open water, both inland waters or coastal and marine waters," he said.

Especially if graduates work as Health Safety Environment (HSE) staff and other staff in the offshore oil and gas sector, he said that this sea survival training certificate is mandatory.

"Even more than that, it is also required to have T-Bosiet, Huet, Life support certificates and others. Many alumni of the MSP Department are involved in the environmental field, especially those related to management, stock assessment, conservation, ecotourism of the aquatic environment (fresh and marine). So this basic sea survival skill will greatly enrich your knowledge and skills," he concluded. (HEF/Zul) (IAAS/Res)
