Dosen Mengabdi IPB University Encourages Rabbit Breeders in Bogor
Dosen Mengabdi(Lecturer Service Program) IPB University was held recently to continue giving impacts in the society. Rabbit breedes and lovers around Bogor got knowledge about Rabbit Breeding from two lecturers from Department of Animal Production and Technology, Faculty of Animal Science, IPB University. The program, with theme Nurture (ASUH) our Rabbits, was held by Institute of Research and Community Service (LPPM) IPB University at Research Centre of Agriculture and Village Development (PSP3) meeting room, Baranangsiang Campus, Bogor (14/12).
The workshop was attended by 30 participants who are rabbit breeders. As one of the speaker, Dr Ir Henny Nuraini, MSi gave explanations about Halal Certification of Rabbit Breeding Indusrtyand Safe, Health, Perfect, and Halal (ASUH) Slaughtering Technique.
Dr Henny explained that rabbit meat has many advantages compared to meat from other livestock animals. Rabbit meat contains higher protein content, contains lower fat content, cholesterol content and salt content, also contains ketotifen compund which is a medicine for asthma. Nevertheless, Indonesian Society had not familiar with rabbit meat. The cause of low rabbit meat consumption in Indonesia is related to its halal status.
In the workshop, participants were educated about the standard of halal determination in food, especially for meats. Besides educating right slaughtering technique, ASUH concept will be the quality standard for rabbit meat. the implementation of safe, health, perfect, and Halal (ASUH) standard will convince the society to consume rabbit meat because the quality will be more assured,she said.
Meanwhile, Dr Ir Komariah, MSi gave explanations about Livestock Skin Tanning and Preservation Technology. He explained that rabbit breeders, in general, just focused on rabbit meat and its products, whereas rabbit meat will have additional values if processed right. Besides as raw material for shoes and jacket industries, a poor appereance quality rabbit skin still can be used to make kerupukor krecekfor consumption. This process is also an action to reduce production waste.
This agenda also became a media for rabbit breedes give their aspirations to the government. Drh Patriantariksina Randusari, MSi from Agriculture Office of Bogor City attended the program as participant. She explained, this kind of agenda should become a routine agenda. With this kind of program, the society and goverment will be more familiar with rabbit industry.
I hope rabbit breeding in Indonesia will continue to develop and become big industry, as big as other livestock industries such as chicken and cow. Collaboration from many parties is needed to develop rabbit industry to become a big industryshe said.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Syahril, a participant for Bogor Rabbit Center Community said, without support from govement, local breeders will hard to develop their bussiness. (IAAS/ISL)
