IPB University commemorates the 91st Youth Oath Day of the Republic of Indonesia, by holding a ceremony entitled “United We Advanced” in the Rectorate Square, Dramaga Campus of IPB, Monday (10/28). This theme was taken to reaffirm the commitment that had been built by Indonesian youth through the declaration of the Youth Pledge in 1928. The commitment stated that only with unity, young people can realize the ideals of the nation.

The Minister of Youth and Sports of the Republic of Indonesia in the text of the speech read by the Rector of IPB University, Prof. Dr. Arif Satria expressed his highest gratitude and appreciation to the youth figure in 1928. The award was given to the youth figure in 1928 for having declared the Youth Pledge. This Youth Pledge is a pioneer of Indonesian youth to realize Indonesian independence while maintaining the integrity of the Unitary State of the Republic of Indonesia (NKRI).

Marking the commemoration of the Youth Pledge, the Rector of IPB University carved a note of the importance contained in an article entitled “Diversity Campus”. The Rector said, “Caring for diversity is a teaching of nature. For a moment we see how the universe works. Nature’s work should be an inspiration and lesson for human life and culture. If there are people who do not recognize diversity, do not want to be interdependent, do not want to network with communities that are completely different, meaning that humans have violated the nature of nature.”

The Rector elaborated further, “That is why IPB has always had a policy of recruiting prospective students from all parts of the country through the invitation without testing. It is not because IPB is aware that equality of access to higher education for all Indonesian people is a necessity in caring for diversity. Although historically there are trusts to unite but if they are not treated by ensuring equal access to education, economics and politics, it is very dangerous for the trust itself. This is where justice must be upheld, namely access justice. It is this justice that will treat trust between us. This justice will make us feel like we are siblings.”

The Rector further explained, IPB then developed the spirit of diversity with a one-year dormitory system so that multicultural life could be awakened. Cross-cultural communication is also getting smoother. Since the beginning students are educated to recognize and appreciate multi-culture. The annual student event in the form of the Gebyar Nusantara by BEM KM IPB and the Nusantara Cultural Festival by students of the Vocational School of IPB are a reflection of student awareness about the importance of caring for diversity. “It was at this moment that all regional student organizations (Omda) at IPB presented various cultures in the arts, fashion and culinary specialties of the region. None other than this event to build an appreciation of cultural diversity. This is the commitment of IPB students to continue to strengthen national unity by caring for diversity,” he explained.

The Rector also emphasized that it’s not exaggerated if with the policy of student recruitment for the entire archipelago and multicultural life on campus as above, IPB wants to become a Diversity Campus. “Even though on a small scale, this is the contribution of IPB to continue caring for diversity. These are the small candles that IPB keeps on lighting. No matter how small the candle that we light today, there will continue to be hope that someday we will light the world,” concluded the Rector.
