Guest Lecture on Biology of IPB: Many Endemic Species Found in the Sulawesi Highlands

Department of Biology, Faculty of Mathematics and Sciences, Bogor Agricultural University (Dept. Biology FMIPA IPB) held a Guest Lecture with titled "IPB – SRC 990 / EFForTS Seminar Series (ICESS)" on Wednesday (26/9) at the Main Seminar Room Department of Biology FMIPA IPB. This guest lecture presents Dr. Fabian Brambach, a researcher from the University of Goettingen, Germany. In this guest lecture, the topic presented by Dr.Fabian Brambach was "Diversity, Endemism and Biogeography of Trees Along with Elevation Forest Gradient in Sulawesi". The topic presented was the result of research conducted by SRC 990 / EFForTS with several universities including the University of Goettingen, IPB, Jambi University, and Tadulako University.
In a guest lecture hosted by Dr. Yohanna C. Sulistyaningsih, M.Sc, Dr. Fabian Brambach explained, "Sulawesi Island is one of the most complex geological areas. This is because the formation process is caused by various natural events at once. The sustainability of the island of Sulawesi also tends to be maintained, one of the factors is that the geographical conditions that cause access to forests are still rather difficult to reach when compared to Sumatra and Kalimantan, "explained Dr. Fabian.
The lecture also discussed the distribution of plant species spread across Sulawesi. In the presence of the majority of graduate students, Dr. Fabian explained, "Our findings show that the distribution of plants in Sulawesi shows that 12 percent of them come from the Australian plains and the rest come from Asia and are endemic. Our observations also show that more endemic species are seen in the highlands. We got this result by taking a sample of 16 thousand individuals consisting of 1,300 plant species. The scientific approach that we use includes Phylogenetic science, data from plant fossils and data on distribution patterns that also help us complete this research. "
Dr. Fabian also told a little about his journey during the research. "I have been in Sulawesi for about 1.5 years. As long as there were many parties who helped, one of them, Dr. Sri S Tjitrosoedirdjo. Dr. Sri is a researcher from IPB who is very good to me and the team. After this, me and the SRC 990 / EFForTS team will continue to produce research collaborations with various parties in Indonesia regarding the spread of plant diversity until 2023, "replied Dr. Fabian Brambach.
