Marine environmental issues successfully catered four Bogor Agricultural University (IPB) students to become the representatives of Indonesia in the Korea International Water Week (KIWW) 2018 event in South Korea (12-15/9) which was held by the Korea Water Forum. The four students were Indah Ratna Yutami, Fathan Zain Al Wafi, Gravita Puji Lestari, and Intan Permata Sari.

By joining the Student Activity Body (UKM) Indonesian Green Action Forum (IGAF), the four IPB students successfully became delegates of Indonesia in KIWW 2018. This event was an event that in one of their divisions discussed about  marine projects under the theme “Marine partnership for Sustainable Development”. It mainly discussed about world leadership for Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s), solution implementation, creating economic and social value and also various information.

“The series of events were seminars on marine projects which were participated by 70 countries,” explained Gravita Puji Lestari. The four students discussed about marine research for social and economical development which showed the conditions of the rivers in Bogor. One of the research examples that were discussed about was the usage of local commodities as instruments or as material for microfiltirization of river water which was more economically friendly, easy, and efficient for the target community.

Other research discussed on the utilization of kulong (water wells as an ex-product of mining) as an ecotourism which will be able to increase the economic growth of the community.

Gravita added that besides the topics on water the also discussed about one of the researches done by IPB student on active carbon from the shell of Bintaro in front of the Ministers of India, Ethiopia, Morroco, Indonesia, and America.

Meanwhile, Intan Permata Sari explained that participating in this event is very crucial, this is because it adds up to your experience, knowledge and gives you new insights from academics in the environmental field which focus on developing the quality and quantity of water.

According to Intan, the event also had an impact towards IPB due to the fact that IPB’s basics lie in the field of agriculture and environment.

“During this oppurtunity, we opened a stand which introduced IGAF. Not only IGAF, we also introduced Indonesian culture such as batik, songket, and tenun. We gave them as souvenirs unique to Indonesian culture to those who visited our stand. We also introduced one of IPB’s research which was a helmet from plastic nano technology,” explained Fathan Zain Al Wafi.

During this event, they also succeeded in managing one of the events that were held. This is an achivement by itself due to the fact that the event itself was held by UNESCO. “During this event that we managed the participants that participated were very active compared to the other events that were held,” explained Intan.

For Intan, Fathan, and Gravita this was the first experience for them to take part of a conference such as this, but for Indah this has been her second conference. Many exciting stories were obtained from this event. In the future, all four students hope that they are able to gain more support both morally and materially so that they are able to keep getting academic achivements. (AVR)
