The Sharing of Islamic Economics by Prof. Mohamed Aslam Haneef
Islamization of the economy and the changes for the way of thinking on Islamic economic, in fact should go through the educational process. Was the statement by the institution that implemented such process in the earliest time. Such ideas then was adopted by the International Islamic University of Malaysia (IIUM) in the developing the curriculum for both of its undergraduate and graduate studies programs since 1983.
This was the main point of the International Lecture on Islamic Economic, on Saturday, 30 April 2011, by Prof. Dr. Mohamed Aslam Haneef from the Department of Economics and Islamic Economics and Policy Research Unit of IIUM, held at the auditorium Andi Hakim Nasoetion, Darmaga Kampus, Bogor.
In this lecture, he expressed that in addition to Malaysia, there are three other countries that have implemented the process of Islamization of economy through the undergraduate programs, namely Pakistan, Uganda and Sudan. Pakistan began such education program since 1980, or three years earlier than Malaysia. These four countries are members to the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC).
In addition to planned curriculum, Prof. Haneef also explained the importance of informal education processes, such as training courses, and attitude of academic community that reflects Islamic values. Prof. Haneef also stated that the quality of the curriculum is determined by the quality of faculty members.
Response to this, the Chairman of Study Program on Islamic Economic, Department of Economics – Faculty of Economics and Management Bogor Agricultural University, Dr. Irfan Syauqi Beik explained, "Qualified faculty members who understand economics as a whole, both Islamic and conventional economics are really needed. For Bogor Agricultural University, we will encourage our faculty members in the related study program to improve their expertise and competence. For those who teach on conventional economic, they will encouraged to imporve their knowledge by taking Islamic economic. In the contrary, for those whose educational background are Islamic economics, they will be encouraged to learn the conventional economic perspectives. "
The balance in understanding of these two things, explained Dr. Irfan, was our awareness to the present realities that our economy is still dominated by conventional economics. Present on this occasion, among others, Dr. Yusman Syaukat, Dean of Faculty of Economics and Management Bogor Agricultural University, Chairman of the Department of Economics, Dr. Dedi Budiman Hakim, Faculty membersm, and hundreds of students.
