Farming with Science
The extent of of science and technology in the world of agriculture has not been well-published to the young generation of Indonesia. As a result, agriculture in the eyes of the youth is still considered less interesting. Therefore, on the visit of hundreds of students from the high school ‘SMAN 1 Majalengka’, West Java to Bogor Agricultural University (IPB), the IPB Public Relations and Protocol Executive Secretary tried to give a broad understanding of agriculture.
"This is a valuable opportunity for the students of SMAN 1 Majalengka and we are in IPB together opening an insight into the world of agriculture and changing the way young people think of agriculture as something of little interest. By studying at IPB, we expect to practice farming out of science and not simply using a hoe and a large hat," said Siti Nuryati, S.TP, M.SI., a staff of Public Relations of IPB, at the auditorium of Andi Hakim Nasoetion, Darmaga Campus of IPB,(12/1), speaking as a resource person.
According to her, the many IPB graduates who work in agriculture and other areas at the national and regional level show that the world of agriculture is not solely about on-field farming. Even today, there begin to appear young entrepreneurs, who graduated from IPB and have turnover reaching hundreds of billions of rupiah.
She gave an example that some media recently reported the fact that in the recruitment of CPNS (state employees) in 2010, many vacancies in the field of veterinary medicine were not filled. "This means that the veterinary profession is needed and the number of veterinary workers is still inadequate. So the employment opportunity after graduation for a graduate or vet is still widely open, " she said. (mtd)
